As I approach the end of this project, I can’t help but to feel a bit sad. However, I am also very excited to just say “Done. Here it is” and send it out for the world to see (and hear).
This has been quite the opportunity to learn and experiment. I was able to use films that I grew up watching as a reference for the design of this soundscape and it has been a blast to put my take on it. I think for this reason Ringside has become a passion project and one that I’ll always be proud of.

The last few episodes have gone very quick to a stage in which they are almost done. I found after episode 3 what was the sound of the show and its characters. After that, it became more natural and fluid to experiment with the contrast between tension and comedy and find that nice balance that connects all the episodes.
Meetings with James Twyman (the director) have become more open at this point. We talk about not only the episode I show him, but we make references to the previous ones and start talking about the next one.
James has also expressed that during the first episodes, he would send me a rough sound edit that I could use as a reference and understand what he wants for a scene in terms of intensity and pace. But, during the last three episodes he told me he stopped doing that because he trusts that I know what he wants now. Also, this allows him to put more time on video editing.
I took what James said as a compliment and I definitely appreciate his trust. I’ve had a lot of fun working with him and I also think it’s great that we are usually on the same page, because it makes our meetings very productive and it’s just pure creativity in the room. Throwing ideas at each other and making terrible jokes and puns. Having him there also makes me realise I may have gone too far sometimes and he tells me “I don’t like that. I feel that it would work better….” and I bring it down a bit. He knows what he wants and being on the receiving end of that feedback is just the best.
Once we are all done I believe I will make a breakdown of all the things that went into the sound design for some of the key scenes on RINGSIDE. But, in the meantime, I will enjoy the rest of the time I have to work on it. If you haven't seen the trailer yet, click on the link below and check it out.
Stay tuned.
